The Challenge: The “instruction fatigue”
For LEGO enthusiasts and power-users, the traditional way of building – following sequential instructions – can be inefficient when managing large collections or multiple sets. The process often involves a fragmented workflow where builders spend more time hunting for individual pieces than actually creating. The challenge was to reimagine the building experience by focusing on piece distribution and collection-wide efficiency.
The Solution: A unified sorting hub
The BrickSorter mobile app was developed to shift the paradigm from sequential building to high-efficiency part management. Instead of following one instruction at a time, the app organizes the workflow by grouping specific pieces across an entire collection for distribution.
- Ai-powered identification: Advanced AI models were integrated to identify and catalog bricks instantly, removing the manual labor of inventory management.
- Action card ui/ux: A unified “Action Card” design was implemented to provide a consistent user experience. This system guides the user through finding pieces and placing them into one of five designated “set buckets” with minimal friction.
- Master builder engine: Beyond sorting, the app features a suggestion engine that generates “Master Builder” ideas – creative mini-builds based specifically on the loose bricks currently in the user’s inventory.
- Technical architecture: The project leverages Firebase for a scalable, real-time backend, ensuring that data stays in sync across devices as bricks are sorted and cataloged.
Efficiency Through Intelligence & Automation
To maximize “build time” and minimize “search time,” several key automation and organizational features were implemented:
- Automated part identification: Custom n8n workflows were built to bridge the app with powerful AI models like Gemini and Qwen. These models handle complex part identification and apply efficient sorting algorithms to categorize bricks by type and color.
- Optimized distribution workflows: Instead of a linear path, the system calculates the most efficient way to distribute bricks into five separate buckets simultaneously, significantly speeding up the organization of large bulk lots.
- Generative AI for marketing: Generative AI was utilized to create high-quality promotional marketing assets, allowing for rapid iteration and a professional visual identity for the app’s launch.
- Real-time inventory sync: As pieces are sorted and assigned to buckets, the app provides real-time feedback on set completion percentages and missing parts.

The Impact
By moving away from traditional sorting methods to a data-driven, AI-assisted approach, BrickSorter has transformed a tedious chore into a streamlined part of the creative process. The app doesn’t just catalog bricks; it empowers builders to understand their collection better and get to the “joy of the build” faster.
